Cozy is a word used about a lot of different things, to describe an atmosphere, a decoration style or just a feeling or a vibe. But what does cozy mean? And what part should it have in your interior design?
One dictionary states:
“adjective: cozy
- giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation.” (Oxford languages)
Another describes it:
”comfortable, pleasant and inviting, esp. (of a room or building) because small and warm” (Cambridge dictionary)
The word cozy is often associated with comfort, wellbeing and relaxation. Some may describe it as a manifestation of contentment and warmth. Others would perhaps think it’s about the feelings you get in certain moments, like peace, enjoyment and ease.
Living in Denmark, the concept of coziness comes naturally to me, as it is an integrated part of the culture. For me it is much more than one particular item or activity. It is undoubtedly tied to all your senses. It’s about the wholeness of the moment. It’s a state of being.
You can be in the cozyest environment and still feel uneasy, and you can be cozy in a not very pleasant environment. Doing a specific activity could make you feel cozy one day, and the next it might not. It depends on the fit between the different elements of the situation.

Now you have decorated the place, and it have a beautiful aesthetic and a cozy vibe. Then you have to make sure there’s not anything interfering with your senses, like harsh lighting, wrong temperature or something smelling.
