A place to relax and get cozy, a dedicated space for your greenery or something between a sunroom, an orangery and a greenhouse? All of the above?
One dictionary describes it as:
“A room with a glass roof and walls, attached to a house at one side and used as a sun lounge or for growing delicate plants.” (Oxford languages)
For me a conservatory is an in between thing. It’s both a greenhouse and a sunroom. Sitting in my conservatory writing this blogpost, I think the reason I don’t see it as just a greenhouse is, that it’s attached to a small shed and therefore feels a lot more spacious than an ordinary greenhouse. It doesn’t mean that I won’t have plants in here. I’m planning to use it both as a greenhouse and a space to relax and enjoy the nature while being sheltered from the weather.
The purpose of the room should both be practical and enjoyable. In my conservatory I have cement flooring. I could definitely keep it like that, but I choose to lay a cheap wooden tile to make it feel more warm and welcoming. To make sure the space has the functionality I want from it, I would place down the necessities first. My planter table, storage units and the space consuming furnitures, like the couch and woodworking table. I would love to get our old fireplace out here as well. Afterwords I would get the tools placed, have the things needed to be stored at their respective places and plant the planter boxes I want in here.
Then it’s time to make it cozy! I would place down the cushions for the couch, add some shelves and place some more plants for decoration. Curtains with embroidery, wicker baskets and decorative elements could be a great way to add to the aesthetic and create a natural romantic vibe. I would make sure to have a place for my coffee cup, and as the final touch add some fairy lights and candles.
